"Mom, talk to grandma the way you want me to talk with you when you are older"

Blog again

Why did I skip blogging so much! In 2013, I use Facebook as a blogging alternative, but this is so much better.

Yaman has just stared 1st grade at Okan. He likes the school that we chose because all of his friends go there and it starts late and it is cheaper and more flexible than Eyuboglu. They started to learn to write (cursive handwriting) in the 2nd week. When he first started, he took two rests while drawing one character and a faint writing showed up (letter E and e). 🙂

Sanem is very mature and cute. She shows a lot of make-up, dress-up tendencies that scare me :), but she also gets high grades in many exams and evaluations (formal exams started this year); and she enjoys getting good grades and strive for better (w/o killing herself by any means) since 2nd grade. They just had the first sleep-over (at Tuana’s house in the same complex as us), and there was no sign of "I missed you"s.

Anneler Günü

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 11:47 am

Akşam Serhat Yaman’a slam dunk öğretti, süper tatlıydı, sonra videosunu koyacağım.

Yaman’s tantrums

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 7:59 am

Yaman is crying at almost everything these days. He used to be a very peaceful, always smiley baby
up until he was 1.5? years old. Now he screams and cries whenever he wants something, for
example when he wants to wear the dirty kepce t-shirt, or when he wants to put back on the wet pants
(night time accidents are 1 in every 2 weeks or so); or when he wants something that Sanem is holding!

He is so genuinely affected that it’s hard not to feel for him; its not like he is crying and will stop if we
are not looking (though that happens too, especially when wanting something from Sanem, this is that type).

But we recently watched their birth and baby videos when Serhat transferred them to the computer and
my strength is renewed because I know it will pass soon and we will remember these days dearly.

Aside from that, he is extremely cute anyway. Little lion, little bomb, tombiş oğlum,… He is also very polite
and considerate. He says "I am sorry" (even when we bump on him) and "thank you" regularly.

Demented Yaman

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 6:43 pm

Bu aksam spor salonuna gittik. Saniş bayagı rollerblade yapmaya basladı.

Yaman da yol boyu “Sona’yı bıraktık” diye guldu (baska hicbirseye cevap vermiyor), eve girer girmez de “Sonayı bıraktık :(” diye uzuldu soylenmeye basladı. Serhat ona demented grandpa gibi dedi. O nekadar “Peki Sona yolu bulur mu?” dese de Yaman aynı şeyi söylemeye devam etti. 🙂

Bugun homemade sushi de yaptım. Saniş o kadar mutlu oluyor ki, onun icin herseye deger. bana diyor ki “cok cok cok tesekkurler, sen bunları yaparken ne kadar yorulduysan o kadar teşekkürler”. 🙂

Sanem is sick

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 8:26 pm

I am testing blogging by email, if this works easily, I should blog everyday.

Sanem was a bit sick today so she did not go to school in the morning, as they had a trip. When I called at lunch time and asked how she was, she paused for a moment and gave me the most pitiful cough, so I told her she could stay at home.

Sanem loves homemade sushi (as well as storebought). I will make her some tomorrow. When I made her some last month, she told me I was the "queenest mommy".

To remember…

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 8:50 pm

Yaman running in an exxagerated way.

Yaman not wanting to wear anything; doesnt he get cold? Apparently not! I even searched for “disadvantages of going barefoot cold rheumatism…” but it turned out only benefits! I thought of Rachel. 🙂

Yaman is approaching the end of his gold lion cub hair. It gets tangled every day and will get too hot in the summer. But I am afraid to loose my boy as I have kown him when he gets a hair cut and starts looking like a handsome but older and different boy.

Sanem talking back to me w/ full logic (“as if I told you …, “). In general she is very logical and can defend herself very well.

Sanem was upset yesterday explaining us how she wants sweets after every meal (so 3 times) but she is allowed 2 little treats a day, whereas US, we can have sweets whenever we want! :)/ It was heart breaking for me to hear and watch her shed sweet tears. But my attempts are paying off, she stops even eating chocolate if  it doesnt please her too much, now.

Sanem is talking dearly about her classmate Efe (a boy). I think they both like each others company, if not “like each other”. 🙂 It is very sweet. I heard from Efe’s father that he imitates everyone in class but skips Sanem as “she has nothing to imitate”. 🙂 Today Sanem was explaining how he laid down on her lap in the service bus. We try not to laugh and be neutral, though not too encouraging either (to not encourage “love” issues to early).

SIU conference in Antalya

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 8:34 pm

We went to SIU conference in Antalya, Belek, all of us (me, kids, Sona, mom, Yıldız teyze) except for Serhat who was in the US. The kids had a great time. Sanem is an absolute delight: she even helped me entertain Yaman on the airplane in a great sisterly-voice (“sakın kimse kemerini bağlamasın! gibi). She loves swimming and looked forward to swim “lessons” w/ mommy. This time she learned backstroke (w/o the stroke) and breaststroke, both with tiny arm floats. She was also comfortable with mouth in the water (8/10).

Yaman also enjoys the water and is much less scared of water compared to Sanem. We were very afraid of this, since he could easily go and jump to the pool. He started having forgotten some of his abilities, but quickly catched up and started walking in the water (on hands) and jumping. He was still hard to take care of though, whereas Sanem has been extremely easy (for about a year now).

It’s Been So Long

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 2:11 pm

since I last posted. Something I remember immediately from the last 2-3 months:

– Yaman turned 2, but we did not make a special birthday, thinking that he doesn’t understand. We just got him a cake and celebrated with Babaanne and Dede.

– Sanem is growing up and surprising us with her grown-up behaviour.

– Yesterday Yaman indicated he loves me as: “Anne iyi ki sen varsın, iyi ki aramıza katıldın” 🙂 which is in fact how I tell him I am happy for his birth.

– Sanem started ice skating, when we pushed her to pick one sport. She actually likes it a lot, as it combines sports and beauty and dance. She saw the girls (6-10) who are figure skating with beautiful dresses before her practices and wishes to start figure skating soon. Her teacher, Selin is our favorite, what a lovely teacher!

– Yaman in the mean time imitates the skating moves and says he is too skating. His talk is still as if his mouth is too small and what he says are terribly important things (exclamations etc).

Sanem the gentle soul and prince charming

Filed under: Uncategorized — byanikoglu @ 9:30 pm

Sanem has so far been a very gentle, non-agressive character. Typical conversation:

Reading paperbag princess…

BY: Sanem, what would you say if the prince that you saved told you to go home and put on better clothes? (the  princess’s clothes got ruined while she went through trouble saving him) – I am hoping that she will be fiesty a bit

SY: Teşekkür ederim… (Thank you)

BY: ?? What? Is that all you would say to the rude prince? Try again!

SY: No, I won’t!  (go put better clothes), – sounding slightly more mad.

I admit, I occasionally try to teach her to be less gentle, … and to pick a prince after she learns whether the prince is also smart, hardworking, good …in  our games. This reminds me another nice anecdote, about when she was 4-4.5.

One day daddy plays  the role of prince when we take roles in her imaginary plays and he decides to be a looser prince. After he does his part and asks her to marry him,  she turns to me and says shaking her head:

SY: I dont know about him mom, I dont know about him.

I was pretty suprised with the English here (that game was in English).

When he finally becomes a cool prince (by only making a commanding, confident voice), she immediately accepts his marriage proposal! whereby I start educating her in being demanding about princes too. 😉

By the way, for future credit (Sanem!), I play the imaginary games for 10-30 min. every day! She is a lost/hurt baby animal; she is Bambi; or she is the michievous little Ariel -until she was 5,; or our general favorite Alexia games with, our bad, jealous character… where she is  “Lena”, often Alexias’ older sister or friend). The games are often in English.

After describing a long game to me one day, she goes:

SY: Başşla Anne, başla!  – when I am only half-awake…, later this became a joke she would use to start a game.
